What was it about 12 Daily Pro that enticed possibly thousands of Utahns to invest their hard earned money? Sure, the web site promised that a person could "Earn 12% Daily", but what convinced them that such an incredible interest rate was even possible?

Those who have studied the dynamics of get-rich-quick schemes in homogeneous cultures say it has more to do with who is making the promise than the promise itself. They believe most Utahns did not become familiar with the program by coming across the web site, but rather by word of mouth. They likely heard about 12 Daily Pro from friends and family -- even the people who sit next to them in church. They heard about it from people they trust.

"If you trust somebody, then essentially they are vouching, your friend or your neighbor or your family member is vouching for the integrity and legitimacy of the financial proposal," says Daniel Medwed, an associate professor of criminal law at the University of Utah. "And this will allow you to put blinders on and not necessarily look at the underlying problems."

Investigators do not have an accurate count on the number of people involved with 12 Daily Pro. The internet site has claimed more than 300,000. But even though it's membership is global, investigators believe there are concentrations of members in Utah and South Georgia. And in both places, the program seemed to spread among religious congregations. Faith played a key role in the recruitment of new members. Professor Medwed says, "Con artists will often go after religious groups. And it is not necessarily only in Utah or South Georgia. It might also be in a Jewish community in New York."

God also occupies a significant place on the 12 Daily Pro Forum. There's a section headlined: "12 Daily Pro Prayer Warriors" that includes the topics "prayer requests" and "scripture".

Charis Johnson has even been known to invoke deity. "God Knows the Truth," she once wrote. "We're praying for you," was the reply of the faithful.

Tom Bartholomy is President of the Better Business Bureau in Charlotte, North Carolina, home to 12 Daily Pro. He says the rhetoric of some of the members sounds like those in a cult. "Some of the postings we're starting to see now on 12 Daily Pro are taking on that religious zealotry that should be of concern."

Most Utah members of 12 Daily Pro would take exception to the implication that they've joined some sort of investment cult. And yet, some used religious affiliation to recruit new members. In that sense, they manipulated others by taping into the trust felt among those with common beliefs. In a context of religious faith, they asked others to have faith in them that they knew a way to make some big money -- fast.
