Broadband Over Power Carrier = engineering term. sama la maksudnye ngan Power Line Communication. TQ

Malaysia plans PLC network

Power distribution lines may soon be able to provide high-speed access to the Internet and digital media.

By Kenneth Liew

In a major departure from the current method of connecting to the Internet via phone lines and fibre optics, Malaysia is set to use power lines to access high-speed Internet and digital television services.

Masers Digital, a technology provider for Power Line Communications (PLC), plans to begin a test service for high-speed Internet access delivered through power lines in the first half of next year. PLC will enable data communication through standard power lines used in households or commercial offices. That means getting connected will be a simple task since it only requires plugging into alternating current.

"When PLC is fully commercialised, data communication takes place using existing main cables, reducing interruptions and the cost of laying cables," said Suhaimi Abdul Rahman chief executive officer, Masers Digital. Masers' power line technology converts the existing electricity grid and domestic power lines into a high-speed communications network supporting voice, video and data services. Masers Digital together with six local engineers have developed a power line communication modem with a speed of 224 million bits per second (bps). According to a Masers official, the power line Internet service will be available (at the earliest) end of this year at a speed of 224Mbps. The modem's cost will be about RM200.

"With this enhanced high speed modem, Masers enters a new phase of its market expansion," said Suhaimi.

The modem is designed for both indoor (data, voice, audio and HDTV) and outdoor (medium and low voltage) PLC applications. The implementation of the critical functions of high frequency filtering, digital conversion and power amplification for the AFE (Analog Front End) can be optimised separately for each type of application as needed. The AFE can be implemented using low cost discrete standard components.

The company also said past complications, like unwanted signals caused by using the power lines for both electricity and communication, and degradation of communication quality over long distances have been largely solved.

Customers can enjoy high-speed data links to the Internet, and also receive a wide range of services such as voice over Internet protocol (VOIP), home networking and home automation. To use the new system, would-be customers would first have to acquire a 224Mbps power cable communications modem.

Under the financial support of Malaysia Venture Capital Management, Masers plans to begin a test service for high-speed Internet access delivered through power lines in the first half of next year. Masers will conduct the test service on 100 households in cities and rural areas.
