Game developers unite

BY CHRIS CHONG

IF YOU’RE a game developer who’s looking to expand your knowledge and meet fellow developers, book yourself a place at the upcoming Asian Game Developers Summit (AGDS).

The event will be held on October 11-12 at the Cititel Hotel, Mid Valley City, Kuala Lumpur and is billed as the first of its kind for game professionals in South East Asia. Even so, anybody who is interested in game development is welcomed.

Presently, there are 15 confirmed speakers, who will be giving talks in game design, technical issues, production, art and business.

The AGDS will also offer regional game developers a chance to meet, share knowledge and gain contacts that may be invaluable in the future.

“When you think about it, it’s quite funny that we have all these talented people in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines – and we don’t even know one another,” says Terence Tan, production director at GameBrains Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian games development company.

Tan is a member of the AGDS organising committee, which is made up of key people in the Malaysian games development industry.

“There are quite a number of developer conferences held in the United States and Europe. They offer lots of value, but it costs a lot for companies in South East Asia to send their staff to these events,” explains Tan.

“The whole point of having the AGDS is that it’s more accessible to all game developers in the region.”

In order to compete with the major players in the global games industry, Tan believes that South East Asian developers should work together.

“Individually, none of us have the resources to take on the global market alone. But by forming a strong community, we can help one another to achieve greater goals. This is another aim of the summit.”

Registration for the event is now open. For more information, visit www.agdsummit.com.
